Mastering the SSY Framework

The 15 vs 21 Year Rule

A common point of confusion for parents is the tenure. You only deposit money for the first 15 years. However, the account continues to compound and earn interest for another 6 years without requiring any new deposits. The final maturity happens exactly 21 years from the account opening date.

The EEE Tax Advantage

Sukanya Samriddhi is highly attractive because of its Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) status. Your annual deposits (up to ₹1.5L) are tax-exempt under Section 80C. The interest generated every year is entirely tax-free. Finally, the massive maturity amount you withdraw after 21 years attracts zero income tax.

Common Parent Questions

What happens if I deposit different amounts each month?
That is perfectly fine. SSY accounts are highly flexible. You do not need to set up a fixed monthly SIP. You can deposit ₹2,000 one month, skip the next month, and deposit ₹10,000 later. As long as your total deposits for the financial year are between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000, your account remains active.
Is SSY calculator post office returns different from banks?
No, the returns are exactly the same. The interest rate for SSY (currently 8.2%) is set by the Government of India. Whether you open the account in a Post Office, SBI, HDFC, or any other authorized bank, the maturity calculation and rules remain identical.
Can I withdraw money before 21 years for her college?
Yes, partial withdrawal of up to 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding financial year is allowed. This is permitted only for the girl's higher education once she turns 18 years old or completes her 10th standard, whichever is earlier.
