"Madam, your Aadhaar must be linked to the new digital census portal. Please share the 6-digit verification code sent to your mobile to complete your family's self-enumeration, or your government benefits will be paused..."
1. The Bait: India's First Digital Census
For the first time, the population counting in India has shifted towards a highly digital framework. The government has introduced a Self-Enumeration (SE) portal, allowing citizens to fill out census data online via mobile applications.
While this is a massive technological leap, the lack of public awareness has created a goldmine for scammers. Because people are confused about how the 2026/2027 digital census works, they easily fall prey to fraudsters pretending to be helpful government officials.
2. How the "Self-Enumeration" Fake Portal Works
The scam usually begins with a sophisticated Phishing attack. You will receive an SMS or a WhatsApp message that looks incredibly official. It might say: "Important: Register your family on the Census of India 2027 portal to continue receiving ration and subsidy benefits. Click here to self-enumerate."
- The Fake Link: The link takes you to a website that looks exactly like the official government site (e.g., using URLs like
census-india-2027-update.cominstead of the official.gov.indomain). - Data Harvesting: Once on the site, you are asked to enter highly sensitive data: your Aadhaar number, PAN card, occupation, and crucially, your bank account details "to link direct benefit transfers."
3. The Doorstep Threat: Fake Enumerators
Not all digital census scams happen online. Many fraudsters are physically visiting homes carrying fake ID cards and tablets. They introduce themselves as official Census Enumerators.
Under the guise of updating the population registry, they ask for photocopies of your Aadhaar and PAN cards. In some severe cases, they carry biometric devices and ask for your thumbprint, which is then used to drain your bank account via the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS).
4. The Final Trap: The OTP Fraud
Whether online or at your doorstep, the scam culminates in a single moment: The OTP. The scammer will tell you that to finalize your census listing, you must share the 6-digit verification code sent to your phone. In reality, they are using your stolen Aadhaar and banking details to initiate a massive fund transfer, and that OTP is the final key to empty your account.
5. Red Flags & Your Action Plan
Protecting yourself from the population counting scam requires knowing what real government officials will never ask you.
How to Stay Safe
- Financial Data: Real census officials will never ask for your bank account number, ATM PIN, UPI password, or any OTPs.
- Verify Domains: If you choose to use the Self-Enumeration portal, ensure the website URL ends strictly with .gov.in. Do not click links received via WhatsApp.
- Check IDs: Physical enumerators carry official government ID cards with QR codes. Scan the QR code to verify their identity before answering any questions.
- Report: If you suspect you have shared an OTP with a fake official, dial the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 immediately.
