🛡️ 1. HDFC's New UPI Rule: The 24-Hour Lockdown

While the general UPI transaction limit across most platforms remains at ₹1,00,000 per day, HDFC Bank has enforced a strict new security protocol for new users or device changes. If you register for UPI on a new mobile phone, your transaction limit is now strictly capped at ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours.

FinKinetic Analysis: Why is this a good thing?

Imagine a scammer hacks your device or tricks you into sharing an OTP to take over your UPI account. Because of this new 24-hour cooling period, they cannot drain your entire ₹1 Lakh daily limit instantly. The ₹5,000 cap buys you the crucial time needed to block your account before a massive financial disaster happens.

⚖️ 2. RBI's Masterstroke: ₹50,000 Fraud Recovery

Even with strict limits, what if a scammer still manages to steal your money? The RBI's latest draft guidelines (effective July 2026) shift the burden of proof to the banks. If you lose up to ₹50,000 in an unauthorized digital fraud, you are eligible for an 85% compensation (or up to ₹25,000 max). More importantly, if the fraud happened due to a bank's security negligence, your liability is strictly zero!

How to Claim Your Refund:

  • The 5-Day Rule: To claim this compensation, you MUST report the fraud within 5 days of the incident.
  • Action Step: Do not search for customer care on Google. Immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 and submit a formal written complaint to your bank branch.
  • Timeline: Banks are mandated to resolve the issue and credit the compensation back to your account within 30 days.
