Quick Summary: Your "Tax Passbook"

Think of Form 26AS as your "Tax Passbook." Just as a bank passbook records all your deposits and withdrawals, Form 26AS records every single rupee of tax that has been paid to the government on your behalf. This includes TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) cut from your salary by your employer, TDS on interest deducted by your bank, TCS (Tax Collected at Source) on foreign travel or car purchases, and any Advance Tax or Self-Assessment Tax you paid directly.

Why is it critical? Before filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), checking Form 26AS is mandatory. If a tax deduction (TDS) is missing from this form—perhaps because your employer or bank forgot to deposit it with the government—you will not get credit for it. This leads to a demand notice from the IT Department asking you to pay that tax again. Checking 26AS allows you to spot these discrepancies early and ask the deductor to correct them.

You can download this statement for free from the official Income Tax e-Filing portal, which redirects you to the TRACES website. It is available for every Financial Year separately. The downloaded file is usually a PDF protected by a password, which is your Date of Birth (DDMMYYYY). While the government has introduced a more comprehensive statement called AIS (Annual Information Statement), Form 26AS remains the gold standard for verifying tax credits and refunds.

How to Download Form 26AS & Verify Your TDS (TRACES)

Form 26AS is the most important document for any taxpayer. It is your "Annual Tax Statement" that proves your employer or bank has actually deposited the tax deducted from your income to the government.

Verified: TRACES Portal
Updated: Assessment Year 2025-26

Warning: The "Fake Refund" Email

Scammers send emails looking exactly like the Income Tax Dept saying: "You have a refund of ₹25,000 approved. Click here to verify bank account."

This is a Phishing Trap. The IT Dept NEVER asks you to verify bank details via email links. Always login to the official portal (incometax.gov.in) to check refund status.

26AS vs AIS (The Confusion)

Which one should you trust for filing ITR?

Form 26AS Best for TDS/Tax Credits
AIS (Annual Info) Best for Income Details

Verdict: Use 26AS to verify taxes paid. Use AIS to verify income earned (Dividends, Interest, Share sales). Discrepancies in either can cause a "Defective Return" notice.

Beware of "Ghost TDS"!

Just because money was cut from your salary doesn't mean it reached the government.
